Job Description Job Description Description: Provides fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical services as part of a fire company during an assigned shift. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: In response to alarms as member of firefighting company, provides emergency fire suppression, rescue, and medical services; Uses firefighting equipment, including fire hoses or apparatus at emergency incidents;Lays and connects hose lines, directs water and pressure streams, uses chemical extinguishers, raises and climbs ladders, ventilates buildings, rescues persons;Operates all types of bars, hooks, lines, forcible entry tools, and other rescue equipment; Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and holes in roofs and floors;Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper building levels; Protects citizens' property; performs salvage and clean-up operations; Responds to emergency incidents and utilizes either basic life support(BLS) or advanced life support (ALS) and/or paramedic skills;Provides emergency medical technician level assistance at injury or accident scenes involving basic life support, and paramedic support functionsperforms vehicle extrication;Inspects alarm and fire control systems for compliance with fire code enforcement standards;Cleans apparatus and equipment; replaces medical supplies and equipment used during emergency responses;Prepares and maintains records, logs, and reports regarding alarms, inspections, medical emergencies, and fire prevention activities; Operates all necessary equipment including computer terminals, power tools, hand tools, and fire apparatus;Participates in drills and classes pertaining to medical services, fire suppression, rescue, street locations, hydraulics, and fire inspections; Participates in public education and community relations activities including school visits and fire station tours;Participates in fire prevention inspections and enforces related fire codes; Performs cleaning, repair and maintenance of firefighting equipment and apparatus;Conducts community service and public education activities, conducting business inspections, presenting public safety training classes;Produces reports and written documents to document technical and legal matters;Prepares, conducts and participates in continuing study, training and drill activity to achieve and maintain required skills;Drives fire truck and performs as pump operator when required;Operates on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for assistance in fire fighting and other emergency situations;Responsible for station maintenance, upkeep of firefighting equipment, and fire department property; maintains and cleans quarters;Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of fire hydrants throughout the city;Assists in securing sites by directing traffic, clearing public, clearing landing zones for helicopter landing; setting up lighting and related activities;Assists in the investigation of fires; collect and preserve evidence; secure fire scene. Performs cleaning, minor maintenance, and repair of quarters and grounds; Acts as Fire Driver or Fire Captain as required; per Out of Rank Staffing SOG;Participates in a physical fitness program to maintain physical conditioning;Performs other related work as required.Must possess computer application skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel. Operates the following: hydraulic or pneumatic rescue equipment to rescue trapped or endangered persons and to force entry into locked vehicles or structures, and motor vehicles (automobile and fire apparatus); Uses axes, pry tools, and pike poles to enter vehicles or structures; Uses common hand tools to overhaul a fire scene and perform routine fire apparatus maintenance duties; Engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity and work long hours under emotional stress during emergency situations; Participate in fire drills and physical fitness programs, and comply with department medical and fitness requirements; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, coworkers, supervisors, and the general public; Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs; Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; participates in meetings; Ability to write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information; Ability to follow instructions, responds to management direction; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan; CERTIFICATIONS, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: All Certifications must be approved by the Tennessee Fire Commission. Appointee shall have or obtain the needed Tennessee Fire Commission’s certifications within two years of appointment. With exception of Firefighter Level I Certification. Tennessee Fire Commission Firefighter Certification Level I within one year of employment. (Certification recognized by the Tennessee Fire Commission as Level I) Tennessee Fire Commission Firefighter Certification Level II within two years of employment. (Certification recognized by the Tennessee Fire Commission as Level II) Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation test in accordance with CFR 1910.134 by hire date and must maintain certification; National Board E.M.T. certification (Emergency Medical Technician) Required Qualifications: High School Diploma or Equivalency Preferred Qualifications: EMT Certificate from the State of Tennessee. Paramedic certification, Associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.) or equivalent from two year-college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils; risk of electrical shock and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate except in emergency situations.to blood-borne pathogens and other infectious materials in the course of their duties.
