South Salt Lake is a fast-growing community with new and exciting commercial and residential development. In 2021, we responded to just over 7,300 calls for service of which 85% were EMS related. Each of our three stations operates an ALS ambulance with two engine companies and one truck company. Individuals offered employment without fire certifications are required to successfully complete recruit school. Necessary Certifications : Possession of EMT, AEMT, Paramedic level certification from National Registry or be able to secure reciprocity with Utah Department of EMS (must submit actual certificate). Hiring Process : Successful candidates will be invited to participate in a medical Mega-Code evaluation and physical ability test to be ranked on our hiring list. Working Conditions (Essential Responsibilities and Duties) : Work schedule is 48 hours on duty than 96 hours off Responds to fire, accident, medical and other emergencies. Directs or performs emergency medical procedures and duties. Checks apparatus and maintains medic units. Carries raises and takes down ground ladders ranging from 12 to 45 feet; operates aerial ladders. Lays, charges and operates fire hose (line); collects, folds and re-loads hose on fire apparatus. Carries and throws tarps; operates portable pumps, saws; breeches walls, moves or removes furniture and obstacles. Climbs stairs and ladders carrying equipment such as forcible entry tools, protective gear, fire hose and Fire/EMS victims. Wears a respirator (SCBA) in order to safely perform firefighting operations, or perform rescue in a hazardous atmosphere; duties may require a Firefighter to wear an SCBA thirty (30) minutes to several hours at one time. Cuts or creates openings in structures to ventilate smoke/gases using power saw, ax or other tools. Searches premises and rescues (and removes) victims by carrying them down stairs or ladders; administers first aid to victims (includes starting IVs, placing victim on backboard, administering cardiac care). Sizes up motor vehicle accident scenes; operates extrication tools such as hydraulic jaws, ram, and cutters; dismantles vehicles to safely extricate victims. Performs equipment checks; pulls equipment out of compartments for cleaning and maintenance, maintains medical equipment and checks inventory of equipment and supplies; washes apparatus. Performs household duties at a fire station such as sweeping, mopping, power washing, lawn mowing. Inspects business/industrial and fire hydrant locations for compliance with fire codes. Educates the public on fire safety issues and rules; trains Paramedic students. Disqualification Guidelines : As a general rule, performance indicators and candidate information and records shall be evaluated by considering the candidate as a whole, and taking into consideration the following: Age at the time the behavior occurred Passage of time Patterns of past behavior Severity of behavior Probable consequences if past behavior is repeated or made public Likelihood of recurrence Relevance of past behavior to public safety employment Aggravating and mitigating factors Other relevant considerations A candidate’s qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, using a totality-of-the-circumstances framework. The following shall be automatic disqualifying factors: Any material misstatement of fact or significant admission during the application or background process shall be disqualifying, including inconsistent statements made during the initial background interview (Personal History Statement or Supplemental Questionnaire) or polygraph examination. Discrepancies between this background investigation and other investigations conducted by other law or fire enforcement agencies. Any forgery, alteration or intentional omission of material facts on an official employment application document, or episodes of academic cheating. Receipt of three or more moving violations (or any single violation of a potential life- threatening violation, such as reckless driving, speed contest, suspect of a pursuit) within three years prior to application. Moving violations for which there is a factual finding of innocence shall not be included. Involvement as a driver in two or more chargeable (at fault) collisions within three years prior to date of application. A conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs within three years prior to application. Two convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The inability to give testimony in a court of law due to his/her dishonesty or lack of veracity, or due to prior felony conviction. Conviction of any criminal offense involving dishonesty, unlawful sexual conduct or physical violence. Conviction of any offense classified as a misdemeanor under Utah law while employed as a peace officer (including military police officers) or firefighter. Admission of having committed any act amounting to a felony (including felony offenses later reduced to misdemeanor convictions) under Utah law, as an adult, within five years prior to application or while employed as a peace officer (including military police officers) or firefighter. Admission of administrative conviction of any act while employed as a peace officer (including military police officers) or firefighter involving lying, falsification of any official report or document, or theft. Admission of any act of domestic violence as defined by law, committed as an adult. Admission of any criminal acts committed against children. Acts of consensual unlawful sexual activity with a minor that took place between two minors shall not be included, unless more than four years difference in age existed at the time of the acts. Any history of actions resulting in civil lawsuits against the applicant or his/her employer may be disqualifying. Missing any scheduled appointment during the process without prior permission. Having been disciplined by any employer (including military) as an adult for abuse of leave, gross insubordination, dereliction of duty or persistent failure to follow established policies and regulations. Having been involuntarily dismissed (for any reason other than lay-off) from three or more employers as an adult. Resigning from any paid position without notice shall be disqualifying, except where the presence of a hostile work environment is alleged. Having any outstanding warrant of arrest at time of application. Having been disciplined by any employer for acts constituting racial, ethnic or sexual harassment or discrimination. Having been disciplined by any employer as an adult for fighting in the workplace. Admission(s) of administrative conviction or criminal convictions for any act amounting to assault under color of authority or any other violation of federal or state civil rights laws. Use of the following drugs in the last five years will be considered automatic disqualifiers: Heroin, PCP, Quaaludes. Toluene, Percodan, Crank. LSD, Mescaline. Cocaine, Tai Sticks, Morphine. Peyote, Opium, Demerol. Methadone Psilocybin / Mushroom Amphetamine. Barbiturates Injected / Methamphetamine. The following examples of illegal drug use or possession will be considered in relationship to the overall background of that individual and may result in disqualification: Any illegal use or possession of a drug as a juvenile. Any illegal adult use or possession of a drug that does not meet the criteria of the automatic disqualifiers specified above. Any illegal or unauthorized use of prescription medications.
